The Eye Room
ByThe Eye Room is a magical place where everyone has a little fun. Most of the cases there are done under local with retrobulbar blockade and sedation. Just the ticket for an eye ball procedure.

Occasionally, mostly on Wednesdays, there are General Anesthesia cases for eyes. These proceedures are usually open globe surgeries in youngsters or for patients that do not want to be awake. I have only been in this room twice so I’m no expert like Sue who is the Queen of the Eye Room. I spent two wonderful days with her and Kari learning about MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care) cases and the wonderful people that need surgery for there eye problems.

Dr Raphael pictured here is one of the kindest physicians that I have worked with in a long time anywhere. During this one case he single handedly calmed a patient down and made it possible for the surgery to take place just by being kind to his patient. Working with this caliber of physician is a privilege and one of the great perks for being in this Anesthesia Program at LAC-USC. YeeeeHawwww!! Go Trojans.

Sue has been a Nurse Anesthetist for a long time and one of the Queens of Eye Anesthesia. You can get an appreciation for these things after you see what goes into keeping these patients safe under anesthesia. The goal for anesthesia is to keep the patients eyes free from increased pressure that may happen easily if knowledge and skill are not combined. Sue is a master of this technique and it was wonderful being with her for a couple of days doing eye anesthesia.
